Have you noticed a puddle forming around your dehumidifier? A leaking unit can be frustrating, but before you reach out for assistance, there are a few simple things you can check yourself. Most leaks are caused by minor setup issues or a lack of routine maintenance.
Here are the primary causes of dehumidifier leaks and how to fix them:
1. Check the Leveling
The first thing you should check is whether your dehumidifier is sitting on a level surface. If the unit is tilted, water may not flow correctly into the drainage system. Instead, it can back up and overflow into the base of the unit, eventually leaking onto your floor. Ensuring the unit is perfectly level allows for the proper flow of water through the drainage system.
2. Perform Routine Maintenance
Did you know that your dehumidifier is supposed to be serviced at least once a year? Maintenance is the key to keeping your unit running smoothly and preventing leaks caused by blockages.
- Internal Pump Models:
If your unit has an internal pump, it should be flushed with cleaning solution periodically to clear out any residue.
Advanced Cleaning: If a leak still exists a more advanced cleaning should be done. This involves opening the unit and wiping down the pump reservoir to remove buildup that could lead to clogs.
- Gravity Drain Models:
Cleaning: For gravity drain models, the drain tray and drain hose must be cleaned to prevent the buildup of debris. If dirt clogs the drainage system, water will have nowhere to go but out the bottom of the unit.
