Annual Maintenance for your Storm Dehumidifier

annual maintenance for a watchdog dehumidifier

To keep your dehumidifier running effectively, it’s important to perform the maintenance outlined below on a regular basis.

Before beginning any maintenance or repairs, always remember to turn your dehumidifier off and allow it to shut down completely. It can take up to a minute for the unit to cycle off.

Tools Needed:

• Self Rinsing, Foaming Coil Cleaner (such as WEB Coil Cleaner)
• Cleaning Solution
• 1 oz bleach mixed with 15 oz water OR 4 oz white vinegar mixed with 12 oz of water
• Approximately 32 ounces of water ( two 16.9 oz bottles works well)

1. Cleaning the Filter on the dehumidifier

First, you will need to remove the filter from the dehumidifier so you can clean or replace it. Whether you clean or replace the filter will vary based on which filter you are using:

Prefilter: Vacuum or rinse with warm water (no soap)
MERV-8 Filter: Vacuum or rinse with warm water
HEPA Filter: These filters are not washable- replace as needed
Carbon Filter: These filters are not washable- replace as needed.

2. Cleaning the Coils on the dehumidifier

Once the filter is clean, it’s time to move on to the coils. To clean the coils, you will need to use a self-rinsing, foaming coil, such as WEB Coil Cleaner. Spray the entire surface of the coils with the spray, then let sit for 5 minutes before moving on to the next step. You don’t have to rinse off the cleaner, the dehumidification process will rinse it off for you.

3. Cleaning the Pump on the dehumidifier

Now it’s time to clean the condensate pump. To do this, first push the drain button to empty the reservoir, then unplug the dehumidifier. Mix your cleaning solution*, then carefully pour into the drain tray. Allow the cleaning solution to soak for 15 minutes, then plug in the dehumidifier. Pour the 32 ounces of water into the drain tray and allow the pump to cycle through at least 2 times to flush out the cleaning solution.
